About Us

Mission

Health is not synonymous with medicine. Care must go beyond the confines of doctors offices. Medical providers must understand how to provide equitable health care that meets the diverse needs of patients. The mission of Medicine for the Greater Good (MGG) is to educate and train community members, medical residents, and health care professionals on the socioeconomic determinants of health, equipping them to eliminate barriers between what the health care system is currently able to provide and what communities need.

Vision

MGG, a Johns Hopkins Medicine initiative, focuses on eliminating socioeconomic barriers to health and ensuring wellness for all communities. By working hand-in-hand with local schools, churches, and community centers to foster trust and wellness, MGG is building a reliable ecosystem that brings health care directly to those who need it.

MGG strives to be as involved as possible with our community. Here, co-director Dr. Galiatsatos poses with a volunteer and Hof City Sports representatives at a summer sports camp.

History

MGG was established in 2013 at Johns Hopkins Bayview (JHBMC) to promote health and wellness beyond hospital walls. Through hands-on projects and initiatives, residents, doctors, community health workers, and volunteers work with local schools, churches, and community centers to foster wellness and bring health care directly to those in need. MGG has trained over 100 community members, health professionals, residents, and students, impacting more than 10,000 Baltimore city residents.

In the decade since its founding, MGG has learned from the communities it serves and grown. MGG, in partnership with Johns Hopkins, has one of the only accredited Community Health Workers (CHWs) training courses in the state of Maryland and is working with the hospital system to make CHWs a sustainable workforce.
